Founded in the 12th century, then partly renovated during the Ancien Regime, Fontevraud abbey is the largest monastic site in Europe kept in its original state. Necropolis of the Plantagenet dynasty, it houses Eleonor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart’s recumbent statues.
At the crossroads of Anjou, Poitou and Touraine, the rocky outcrop from which Chinon royal fortress is hanging was a strategic site as early as the Antique era and has been coveted for centuries.
The Fontevraud Modern Art Museum is located 3 km from the hotel. Inaugurated in 2021 in the 18th century Abbey building, the Museum of Modern Art invites visitors to discover a collection where great names in the history of 19th and 20th century art interact with arts from outside Europe and antiquity. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Edgar Degas, Maurice de Vlaminck, Albert Marquet, Kees van Dongen, Robert Delaunay, Juan Gris, André Derain… So many names that have marked the history of art and which appear today in the astonishing collection of the Modern Art Museum of Fontevraud.
